Larkspur, CO: Landing in a Heap
Summer RVing with no reservations in Colorado means being flexible with cost, location, or timing. Since we have to stay somewhere, that means cost and location flexibility are a must. For this stay, we flexed on cost and surprised the kids with a special stay to celebrate Luke’s birthday.
After the relentless heat in Longmont, staying in a water park was pretty great. Full hookups, wifi, several pools and recreation areas, crafts, concerts, activities - here, the park is the destination. The kids were stunned and had no idea an RV park could be like this. It was a little overwhelming staying in such a place for two whole weeks, as the intensity of the activity was so high with everyone trying to maximize their expensive, short stays. We had to work to pace ourselves a little bit. [They didn’t -Ed.]
The weather here was also a notch cooler than the previous week, plus we had hookups, so overall it was quite decadent. Most days the hardest question we had to tackle was which pool to play at, and when to play mini golf. Most of this trip has been travel, but this felt like vacation. The kids are becoming excellent swimmers, and we’re all slowly turning pink in the sun, and it’s pretty darn relaxing.
It was nice to have such fun activities for the kids, sadly my time here was dominated by medical concerns. Back in Silt my right ankle started to hurt, and it seems like a sprain. It’s been swollen and painful to walk on ever since. It felt well enough to go down the waterslides a few times on our last full day, at least. But I went to urgent care this week and got a boot I’ll be in for a while. I also started working with a sleep clinic here to see why I haven’t been getting refreshing sleep since March, but most of what we learned was that it’ll probably take until we’re in Portland again to make progress. It’s nice to get care, but hard when it’s not a cure.
From here we’ll go up into the mountains for our first RVers rally, an event called Convergence by the Xscapers, a club for working-age RVers. We’re excited to meet other families and make connections!
