The Hangover: Wellington, CO
We knew we needed a break after Convergence, but as we’ve discovered, Colorado is full. We’re also going into kind of a weird phase of the trip. We bought tickets to the next Convergence, in Driggs, Idaho, before attending the last one. (Thankfully it ended up being a fun event, so we still want to go.) But Driggs really isn’t that far from Salida, so we have 5 weeks to fill. That’s kind of a lot of time given the relatively short distance between these places.
In any case, we needed a place to crash for a week that was a days’ drive from Salida, roughly headed north. We ended up back on I-25 through Denver, up north of Fort Collins in a tiny community called Wellington, at an old KOA.
It was quiet, it had full hookups, an adequate playground, and wifi that sometimes worked. That’s about all we needed after a week of excitement!
It also had flies… clouds of flies. And smelled like cows. Both thanks to the feedlot next door. I’m guessing that came after the KOA did, because who would put an RV park next to a feedlot?
While here I went to Urgent Care again for my foot, which continues to be swollen and painful. They did a couple tests but had no clear diagnosis. I also spent a bunch of time on the phone trying to get someone in Cheyenne, where we’ll be next week, to replace the leaf springs on the RV. They’ve been fully- or over-loaded since we moved in, and are starting to get worryingly flat. Between here and Portland this fall we’ll mostly be in pretty small, remote towns. Cheyenne is our biggest stop for quite a while, so it makes sense to try to get it done now.
We drove into Fort Collins several times, it’s pretty cute. I took the kids to Pub Golf on Friday and gave Kristin a break. We found a very good coffeeshop. But mostly we rested!
