The Moving and the Moving In
The cats get to stay, but the rest of this? Who knows.
How fast can you move in? It's just a trailer, right? It's like moving into a big hotel room, right?
No, it's not. You know how when you travel, you stay in like, vacation rentals or hotel rooms, and you bring only a suitcase of stuff? They have towels, and dishes, and dish soap, and bedding all there. But the RV has none of that. So we have to bring all our own.
Ok, maybe it's camping? This is basically camping - you're self-contained, mostly, and going to remote places. You bring your own bedding, and dishes and stove, and shelter, etc. So maybe it's closer to that, except... bigger. But what's the longest time you've gone camping? A week? Two weeks? Three weeks and you're going to need a resupply stop, maybe some laundry. But we're bringing our own laundry machines. So it's bigger than that.
Ok so it's a house. Tiny for a house. Not quite Tiny House size, but pretty close. Even those houses aren't self-contained, they have water and sewer and electrical hookups all the time. We have a generator, and 5 liquid tanks, and batteries, extra stuff and weight to work around. So it's smaller than its 40' length would indicate.
It's its own thing, that's for sure.
We severely underestimated how much stuff we really had in the house. We also overestimated how much of it would fit, even in 40 feet. Several boxes ended up going to storage once we started trying to find homes for things, and that might not even be the last of it. If I had to do it again, I'd spend more time living in the RV next to the house, and plan a week or more after that living in it with hookups nearby. As it is, we've been here at Columbia since last Wednesday, and we're leaving tomorrow. So it'll be 6 nights when we planned 3. May as well have booked a week and saved some hassle.
Speaking of hassles, the Highlander went to the broker to sell on consignment. Same guy that got us Sheila. We saw eye to eye on price so he's going to spend the time that I don't have trying to sell it. Was a great car for 7 years and I hope it is good to its new owner, whoever that will be.
The cats are going in carriers tomorrow for the trip to Seattle. They probably won't like it, but at least they'll be limited in their ability to damage the truck/us. I'm pretty nervous about it, but also looking forward to what is really our maiden voyage out of Portland. It'll mark 3 months since we decided to commit to this journey, and Day 1 of the rest of it.
